FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Why do you share a child's photo on social media?
The Heart Gallery of Alaska utilizes the power of media to capture the individuality of legally free children living in foster care. These youth are given the opportunity to advocate for themselves by sharing their stories and what they hope for in a Forever Family.

The Heart Gallery also raises awareness about the need for equipped families who feel called to adopt through foster care.

Do the youth want to be featured on the Heart Gallery?
The decision to be featured on the Heart Gallery is made by the child and their support team. We highly value the youths' desire on whether or not they are featured.

Is every child you work with featured on the Heart Gallery?
No. We have many children who either desire to not be featured or cannot be for other reasons.

How do I know if I'm a match with a youth?
If you are interested in a specific youth or have questions overall, sign up for our next Adoption and Permanency Orientation; this is where you begin! Because we are looking for the right families for our youth, we are careful with the information we share at first glance.

What does Legally Free mean?
A legally free youth in foster care is a youth that cannot return to their family of origin. These youth are still in the foster care system; however, they are now looking for different permanent options, like adoption or guardianship. The Heart Gallery of Alaska only works with legally free youth.

How much does adoption cost?
Adopting through the foster care system is covered by the State of Alaska. Additionally, the Heart Gallery offers information and support to families at no cost.
